H2O Overdrive SUP Cup Park City, Utah
We flew into Salt Lake City from LA on Friday evening to get here in time to take part in the H2O Overdrive SUP Cup race being held at Lake Jordanelle near Park City. The big outdoor retailers trade show starts Monday as well so there is lots going on here. Saturday morning we were up early to eat and make the 30 minute drive to Park City, we were not sure where the lake was so we wanted to give ourselves plenty of time to make the 11:30 start. As it turned out we did get a bit lost so the extra time was good to have! It was a beautiful day and by the time we got there some high clouds had moved in so it was not so hot. The organizers set up a 1 and 1/4 mile loop course to do 4 times with a zig zag and a short beach run between each lap. Joe Bark and Charlie from Bark boards brought a van load of boards and paddles up from LA, including mine, so it was great to not have to stress about getting equipment there. Thanks to both of them for that and to Charlie for being my “board handler” during the race! The race was tough mostly because of the altitude (about 6000 feet) I think everyone was feeling it. I noticed it for sure and had some coughing along the way and even a nose bleed, I was lucky enough to win (Rob Rojas came in second with Byron Kurt in third, see the picture above, the caption did not come out for some reason) and take home some prize money but the best part of these events is hanging out with everyone. The other racers, sponsors, race organizers…its all fun. Thanks to the Bark crew for the super fast board, the board transport and the sandwich too Charlie! Thanks to Jim at Quickblade for the shade under your tent and as always for my paddles. The Surftech crew was there as well to watch the race and Duke invited me along to go luging (I have no idea how to spell that) after the race so we met up with them after the awards dinner
at the lodge at the base of the ski hill and rode the chairlift up to the top of the course. You sit on these yellow sleds with a hand break in the middle and take off down this luge course to the bottom. You can get as much speed as you feel comfortable with and the Surftech guys had perfected it, they were blazing! It was a blast and Duke got it all on his Go Pro camera you can go to the Surftech Facebook page and check it out. It was a long but really fun day. Tomorrow is the demo day part of the trade show back at Lake Jordanelle, I am going to do a fun fund raiser race to benefit the Gulf Coast with the help of my sponsor FCS there, then Tuesday the trade show will be at the Salt Palace back in the city. Lots going on, I’ll check in in a day or two. Aloha, ST
