2nd Annual Punta Sayulita Longboard and SUP Classic

I just flew home this morning from Sayulita, Mexico where I attended the 2nd Annual Punta Sayulita Longboard and SUP Classic.  Kevin Roberts and his crew sure know how to put on an event!  This was one of those events that you don’t want to miss just cause it is so much fun.  Sayulita is this very cool little surf town just north of Puerto Vallarta, the locals were super welcoming, the accommodations were so nice, the food was great, the waves were small this weekend but fun, it was a diverse group of competitors from all over competing in longboard, mens and womens, SUP wave riding and racing and they even had a short fun race. The local surf talent was awesome.  Mishka, a really talented Reggae artist, put on an amazing concert Saturday night on the beach, everyone had a blast.  The awards dinner was set up on a bluff above the bay with spectacular views and a food spread was unreal.  Mishka even joined the band later in the evening with everyone dancing.  It was fun to see all the different SUPing styles and the long boarders were fun to watch.  I want to thank my sponsors Maui Jim for getting me there and for being an event sponsor, SUP Co for being an event sponsor and for all they do for me, Quick Blade for my awesome race and wave paddles, my Infinity wave board with FCS fins and OAM pad and my Bark race board rocked! Thanks to Camelbak for keeping me hydrated and H2O Audio for all the music.  But the important thing is that the event was all in support of the Punta Sayulita Foundation and Reef Check, two great organizations.  Finally, I want to be sure a mention that all of us at the event had our thoughts and prayers going out to everyone in Japan who is dealing with the horrendous earthquake and tsunami.  We had some weird tidal surges during the event that were constant reminders of what was happening thousands of miles away.  It really puts things in perspective.  So a big gracias again to everyone in beautiful Sayulita, Mexico, all the locals, volunteers, Kevin, Erin, Brett, Jose Luis, Syda (I know that I spelled that wrong) Omar and all the others that I am missing…we had a great time!!!  Aloha, ST

Here is a quick rundown of results…Sean Poynter took home the SUP wave first place trophy,  Darren Eudaly won the men’s longboard, defending champion Mary Osborne took first in women’s longboard, Candace Appleby won the women’s elite race (and took third in women’s longboard, way to go Candace) I won the men’s elite and distance race with Anthony Vela and Zane Schweitzer taking second in third in both as well.  Sky Robbins won the women’s distance race.  For a full listing of all results go to the Punta Sayulita website
