Namotu

Just got back from my first trip to Namotu, Fiji, I hope there will be many more trips there in my future.  I went for the Namotu World Paddle Challenge.  Namotu is small island totally set up for surfing and with some famous surf breaks just off shore in the surrounding reefs.  It was a really fun group that went to race, Connor Baxter, Kai Lenny, Noa Ginella, Zane Schweitzer and I all stayed on the island while other racers came over on race day from surrounding resorts.  It was a blast being on the island.  The Fijian people are so welcoming, always with a smile.  The whole staff was awesome, the food was delicious and everyone had a great time.  The three days of  racing was tough with the first race a 22 mile downwinder.  The second race was a sprint course out through the reef break and back in.  We had to surf through several heats to get to the final with some head high white water and waves to get through.  After the two races 5 of us were in a tie so they added a third race on Friday to break the tie for 1st and 2nd between Connor and Kai and the tie for 3rd, 4th and 5th between me, Noa  and Jake Jenson from Australia.  All races were on 12’6″ boards.  At the end of three races Connor came out on top with Kai second and me third.  Everyone raced hard throughout the week and it was just fun hanging out with the whole crew, photographers, Namotu staff and guests, race organizers and all the other racers.  We even got in a bit of surfing, snorkling, fishing and just relaxing.  A big thanks to everyone at Namotu, the staff, Scotty and Amanda, race organizer Tristan Boxford and his wife, Ku’ui, the water safety crew including Dave Kalama and Victor Lozano, the photographers, Steve, Larry, Christian and Matty.  I don’t want to forget anyone so thanks again to all who participated.  Also I could not do all these amazing adventures without my sponsors so thanks to all of them as well.  Infinity for the awesome  boards, FCS for my amazing race and wave fins, Maui Jim for the best sunglasses out there, Camelbak for the much needed hydration pack during the long races and H2O Audio so that I can always have my music with me on the water.  Aloha, ST
