Snowboarding in Sun Valley, Idaho
I missed out on snowboarding last winter and so this winter made it a priority to try and put together a trip. So I took some time off of school and training and headed to the mainland. My good buddy and fellow SUP paddler, Matt Becker, and I took off from his house in Santa Barbara at about 5am and headed for our first stop on the way to Sun Valley, Idaho, Las Vegas. Dad had given us exact directions from there to make our way through Nevada but we missed a turn off and ended up going through Utah rather than Nevada. It added several hours to our trip but just before midnight we drove into Ketchum and made our way to where we were staying. My Mom’s family has been in the Sun Valley area for five generations and Mom spent much of her life growing up here. Dad lived there for twelve years, my parents got married there and my older brother, Tanner, was born there. So I have a connection and I have always loved going, summer or winter. We still have lots of family and friends in Sun Valley and it is always a blast to go visit and get some mountain time. It is one of the most beautiful ski resorts anywhere, the mountain is amazing and the town has so much history, it was where the chairlift was invented back in the 30′s. Ketchum and Sun Valley are exactly what you would think a ski town should be like and it came through for us. We woke up our first morning to 8 inches of new. We spent the next five days snowboarding with my good friends Sierra and Sophia (the girls were actually skiing and are incredible skiers) and visiting with some family friends that I had not seen in a long time. After snowboarding all day and staying out pretty late each night by the end of the trip we were wiped out. But we made our way back, the right way this time, to Santa Barbara in about 14 hours and crashed at Matt’s house. I flew back home a day later after an amazing trip, can’t wait till next winter! Thanks to Maui Jim and Zeal for the awesome goggles, thank you, Rick, for letting us stay at your home, thanks Sierra and Sophia for skiing with us and all the apre ski fun, thanks to Matt for the use of your truck for the trip and to your parents, Mark and Martha, for having me and the great food, thanks Kathy and Jim for storing my snowboard gear and for meeting us for dinner. Bottom line, I love water, liquid or frozen…so many fun things to do on it!!! Aloha, ST
